What is a MID Server?

A MID Server is a lightweight Java process that operates on both Linux and Windows platforms within enterprise networks. It acts as a bridge between the ServiceNow cloud platform and the various devices and applications located within the internal network of an organization. Its primary function is to facilitate communication and transfer data securely, enabling ServiceNow Discovery to identify and map the infrastructure components in real-time.

The MID Server is crucial for the Discovery process because it can interact with applications, servers, and devices that are behind the corporate firewall, which would not be accessible directly from the cloud. This means the MID Server allows for detailed configuration item (CI) data collection, thereby ensuring that the ServiceNow instance has an accurate and up-to-date view of the enterprise's IT landscape.

Other options do not accurately capture the role of the MID Server; some describe other systems or technologies that serve entirely different purposes. For instance, a high-end server used for advanced data processing might involve significant computing resources but does not perform the network communication role that the MID Server fulfills. A security tool for managing access controls has a different focus, related more to security protocols than data discovery.
